Warm greetings from the Cornell Club of Sarasota-Manatee (CCSM) in the Sunshine State.

Join us as we celebrate the 67th year of our club in 2024! Our in-person culinary and cultural events happening every month are wonderful opportunities to connect with Cornellians in our area.

Look for announcements and links being sent out to our members and explore our exciting events page postings.

We welcome any Cornell alumni, spouses, family, friends and parents of current and past students in the Sarasota-Manatee area to join our ranks and enjoy the benefits of our club. We even have a "Young Alumni" group (graduates from 1985-present) that organizes events with the other local Ivy League alumni.

Visit our Join/Renew Membership page to sign up, it's a bargain at $30 for an individual and $40 per couple. The Cornell Club of Sarasota-Manatee is a group where people come together for stimulating and educational events, socialization, and camaraderie. We have fun!

Wishing you sunny days ahead and “Hail, All Hail, Cornell!”

Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.”

Matilda Rabinowitz’s illustrated memoir challenges assumptions about the lives of early twentieth-century women, which is why it’s so perfect for Women’s History Month. To see a selection of scratchboard images from within her book carved by Robbin Legere Henderson, Rabinowitz’s granddaughter:

Thank you to all alumni who shared advice like the comment by fellow CCSM member. These were shared to all students who attended student send-offs as well as added to the Alumni Advice section of the Cornell website.

Feel free to share these with local alumni and students!

Today we celebrate the history of America’s labor movement, all the workers and unions that built our country.

Photo from The Kheel Center for Labor-Management Documentation and Archives at Cornell University ILR School, reposted.

    From a fellow CCSM Member:

Ted Kheel, the man for whom The Kheel Center was named, was a great labor lawyer and arbitrator  in New York in the 60's and 70's.

As a radio reporter I covered "Teddy", as he was called, when he mediated major public employee union strikes---sanitation men, transit workers, firemen, etc.

Those labor talks were marathon affairs requiring long stakeouts by the press. We spent many hours at the Americana (now the Sheraton) Hotel on 7th Avenue waiting for some break in the talks.

The transit workers' contract used to run out on New Years Eve. The Sheraton set the press up in one of their ballrooms and provided great free food and booze.

By the time midnight rolled around we were feeling no pain---so we didn't care what the outcome was. But it was usually a deal. Which meant that, in the early hours of New Years Day I could go on the air and report that everything would be OK. Then I grabbed a few hours of sleep.

Teddy's outfit during those all night talks: pajamas, a bathrobe and slippers. He would "commute" between management and union hotel rooms carrying the latest offers back and forth---and usually he finally got a deal. A very sharp guy.

    Those were the fun days.

His daughter, Ellen, was a Cornellian too.

    Best,

    Mike Eisgrau '62

Idalia’s path and strength remain uncertain, but hurricane and storm surge watches have been issued for our area.  It is expected to intensify quickly upon landfall and might be a Category 3 with winds of at least 111 mph.

FYI Florida's Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday is going on now, many hurricane prep supplies are tax-free to help you prepare. Sarasota garbage collection is temporarily halted.

In addition to preparing your house, gathering supplies for yourselfand any pets, charging your electronics/essential batteries, making a emergency plan, consider documenting your property and downloading the FEMA app or another form of alerting (Sarasota CountyManatee County).
